ACKC General Membership Meeting
Location: Central United Methodist Church, 17 Nanticoke Ave., Endicott
Don Hall called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. First time attendees introduced themselves. Don thanked Becky Buchanan for the refreshments.
Secretary’s report: Minutes of the September meeting were e-mailed to members, posted on line and made available at the meeting. The club voted to accept the minutes as presented.
Treasurer’s report: Not available.
Membership report: Not available
Rick Shumaker reported that the Binghamton University kayaking class did a great job on the Lehigh River. In just six weeks, Steve Busch taught members of the class enough skills to successfully negotiate whitewater. The university also had enough interested students to hold a canoe class.
Chris Nielsen reported that he and Marcia Borden couldn’t do their Columbus Day trip on the West Branch of the Susquehanna, due to low water. They did lead a trip on the New River in Virginia in early October. Chris said that he already has his trips planned for 2013. He will give that information to Ron Jerauld to add to the club’s schedule.
Becky reported that some club members went on a four-day, non-club paddling and camping trip in the Pocomoke Wildlife Refuge in Maryland. They paddled on the river and on creeks and went to Jones Island State Park.
Rick said that the people organizing the 2013 Susquehanna Sojourn are considering paddling the stretch from Hallstead/Great Bend to Sayre/Athens. He hoped the club would support this effort.
Don mentioned that we need people to replace outgoing members of the club’s executive council. Anyone interested, please contact Don, or Sharon Canfield, or send a message through Merrill Douglas. There will be 2-4 seats coming open. The vote will take place at the club’s annual dinner on November 12.
Chris said he was concerned that we didn’t already have a slate of candidates, since that leaves no time to arrange for absentee voting, as the bylaws require. He suggested that in the future the club not use absentee ballots; club members would have to attend the November meeting in order to vote on candidates for council. Chris volunteered to write an amendment to the bylaws in the spring.
Don asked whether anyone would like to form a nominating committee. There were no responses.
Don reminded the group that the next meeting, the annual banquet on November 12, will start at 6:30 p.m., a half-hour earlier than our usual starting times. Gene Nowlan is preparing mileage awards to give out at the dinner. Ron will put together a slide show of the year’s activities.
Don adjourned the meeting for refreshments at 7:15.
David Yost gave a presentation on what to look for when shopping for a canoe or kayak and on his canoe-building techniques.
Next meeting: Annual club dinner, Monday, November 19, 6:30 p.m.
Minutes submitted by Merrill Douglas.
